Dan Wootton and the Silence of the British Media
Byline Times' reporting on the GB News presenter has already revealed much about how the news industry really works in the UK
The full story about GB News presenter Dan Wootton has yet to be told. Publication of the next instalment of Byline Times’ three-year special investigation had to be delayed on Friday after one of our reporters had their email account hacked and blood smeared on their car windscreen. The police have been informed and our reporting will continue.
The decision to go ahead with the story was obviously not an easy one. Wootton is a prominent and influential figure with institutional support from GB News and the Mail. Byline Times is an independent newspaper which relies solely on support from our subscribers and supporters.
The two reporters on the story - Dan Evans and Tom Latchem - spent three years investigating their former colleague, developing countless sources and gathering extensive evidence of his behaviour within the industry.
That evidence was not thin on the ground. In the past week alone, even more of Wootton’s associates have come forward with information about him. The Guardian has also revealed the first details of its own ongoing investigation.
The story still has a long way to go. So what can we expect next and what does this whole saga tell us about how the media really works in the UK?
