Flirting with the Far Right
Why are we so squeamish about calling far-right politics what it so obviously is?
When should we start calling a politician “far right”?
Is it when they pass a law banning almost all refugees from entering the country?
Or when they defend people gathering in large groups to harass and shout abuse at those refugees?
Or when they describe those refugees who do arrive, as an "invasion"?
And refuse to withdraw their comments, even when asked to by a Holocaust survivor?
When is it safe to say a politician is part of the far-right?
Is it when they single out one ethnicity as being to blame for paedophile gangs and child rape?
Even when her own department say that’s not true?
Or when they suggest that "almost all" such crimes are committed by that racial group, who they describe as “running wild”?
And what do we call it when a politician personally intervenes in defence of actual racists facing police action?
Or when “sources close to” that politician describes any attempt to prevent those racists from committing hate crimes as "nonsense"?
What do we call all of this, if we don't call it far-right?
