When far-right rioters launched a racist pogrom on the streets of Britain last summer, the initial response was robust.
Hundreds of rioters were arrested, with many of the ringleaders also rounded up and charged with incitement.
Mainstream publications were near unanimous in their condemnation, while backing the Government’s tough line against those seeking to spark violence on our streets.
Yet very quickly things started to change.
Commentators who had initially condemned the rioters as violent thugs, started to indulge in conspiracy theories about them being victims of a “two tier” criminal justice system.
Conservative leadership candidates joined in, promoting discredited conspiracy theories about the same system they had themselves been in charge of for over 14 years.
Bit by bit, the riot enablers started to shift the blame for the summers’ violence away from the perpetrators and towards the victims.
