Kemi Badenoch and the Conservative party are whipping up dark political forces that will soon come back to haunt them

All it took was a Tweet. Just a single post by a little known Shadow Minister, which this week pushed British politics dangerously to the far right.

The post, by the Shadow Lord Chancellor Nick Timothy, targeted Muslims praying at an annual event in Trafalgar Square, labelling it an “act of domination” that was “not welcome” in the UK.

In any other period such an extreme idea, that British people are not welcome to freely and peacefully follow their religion, would have been a career-ending moment.

Instead, Kemi Badenoch and the Conservative Party this week fully embraced both Timothy, and his policy.

Under a Conservative Government, such events, which have been conducted by followers of all religions in the UK for many years without incident, would be banned.

In a lengthy exchange with Badenoch’s spokesman on Wednesday I tried to get to the bottom of exactly how we got here.

What he told me was extraordinary.
