Voter ID is Working for the Conservative Party
A new report by the Electoral Commission confirms what critics suggested all along. This is voter suppression
Two years ago I asked the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson whether his plans to bring in Voter ID were an attempt at “voter suppression” given those groups least likely to have ID were also those least likely to vote Conservative.
He dismissed my question as “nonsense” before quickly ending the press conference. You can watch the full exchange below.
However, earlier this year his former colleague, Jacob Rees-Mogg, let the cat out of the bad, saying that Voter ID had in reality been a “clever scheme” to “gerrymander” elections for the Conservative party.
He wasn’t lying. In fact a new study published today by the Electoral Commission confirms that the new restrictions on voting have mostly hit the young, the poor and ethnic minority voters. In other words, all of the groups least likely to vote Conservative.
