“The report of my death was an exaggeration,” wrote Mark Twain, following press reports about his premature demise.

Very similar comments could now be made about the suggestions that Partygate had somehow died as an issue for Boris Johnson.

In fact far from reaching the end of the line, it is now clear that Johnson’s lawbreaking is once again a clear and present threat to the Prime Minister.

His shambolic U-turn today on opposition calls for an investigation into his attempts to mislead Parliament, have highlighted quite how precarious his position remains.

In the House of Commons this afternoon Conservative MP after Conservative MP lined up to criticise the Prime Minister and back Labour’s motion calling for an investigation.

Johnson’s former supporter Steve Baker also joined the ranks of those calling on the Prime Minister to accept the “gig is up” and resign.
