Are we now inevitably heading for a Labour government? That’s the big question here at Labour’s conference in Liverpool, following Keir Starmer’s speech to delegates.

His address, which included a surprise new pledge to create a new nationalised energy company, showed a new confidence and belief in his ability to take his party back into power.

This belief, which as I have written for Byline Times today, has been evident throughout this conference, is based on two major factors.

The fist is his partial success in redefining his party’s reputation with voters, after a long and divided time in opposition. The second is the increasingly clear collapse in public trust in the Conservative government.

So is Starmer right to believe that he is about to take Labour back into office, or could he now be setting up his party for yet another big fall?
